History Of Assam in Brief
Assam history was considered to be started from the 4th century because there is no book or novel that tells about the history before the 4th century. The available written history of Assam starts with the Kalika Puran, which tells about the history of the 4th century. The Kalika Puran is one of the oldest manuscripts that give insight into the ancient history of Assam. It covers various topics such as the origin of the Brahmaputra river, the founding of the Kamarupa Kingdom, and the construction of several temples and monuments.
Assam history is divided into four eras, namely the Ancient era, Medieval era, Modern era or Colonial era and the Post-Independence era. The ancient era starts from the 4th century and extends up to the 12th century. The medieval era covers the period from the 13th century to the 18th century. The colonial era refers to the period from the 19th century to the early 20th century when the British ruled the region. The post-independence era covers the period after India gained independence in 1947.
